Why Whitby
Traditional seaside town Whitby is one of the most popular destinations on the North Yorkshire coast. The two halves of the town are separated by the River Esk, with both sides having something different to offer. The East side is home to the Gothic Whitby Abbey, dating back to 656AD, the inspiration for Bram Stoker’s Dracula. Leading up to the Abbey is the 199 steps, at the bottom of which you’ll find yourself on the cobbles of Church Street. Now a bustling shopping street, littered with book shops, art galleries, and iconic Whitby jet stores, the street in fact dates back to the 15th century. Back then, the narrow alleyways served as escape routes for smugglers and gangs, you’re more likely to find a coffee shop down them now though!
The West Cliff top is home to gorgeous guest houses, hotels and bed and breakfasts. There’s also visitor attractions, the iconic Whale Bones and Captain Cook’s Statue. There’s plenty of ways to keep active on your visit, with countless walking routes taking you through the town and also further afield to Sandsend and Staithes. You might even want to make full use of the stunning Blue Flag beaches and take some surfing lessons, or perhaps taking a stroll and watching instead…

Food & Drink in Whitby
Some of our recommended places to eat whilst visiting this stunning seaside town.
Whitby is host to some amazing events throughout the year. One of the most notable being The Whitby Regatta. Started back in the 19th century when fishermen would compete against each other in their boats, the Regatta is now held annually in August. The Regatta weekend embraces yacht racing, rowing races and plenty of fun activities and entertainment on offer. The weekend concludes with a spectacular firework display, to celebrate the oldest sea Regatta on the North East coast. There’s also the goth weekend events, held in April and November. The Dracula Society and fans of the novel and of gothic culture travel to Whitby, dressed in period costume and wandering the town. It’s almost as if the town steps back in time for those few days.
